On October 30 – November 3, 2023, an International Training Course on Nuclear Disaster Recovery was held in Kawauchi village, Tomioka town, Okuma town, and Futaba town, Fukushima Prefecture. In addition to master’s and doctoral students from Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, experts of international organizations such as IAEA, OECD/NEA, and ICRP, and universities and research institutes participated in this course.

  • Introduce the professional participants and overview of the co-expertise process, Introduction and explanation of IDPA methods

    “A short Introduction of Foreign Experts and Students Participating to the Course “, “The recovery phase after a nuclear accident: the contribution of the ‘co-expertise process’” and “A Short Introduction to the IDPA (Identification, Diagnostic, Prospective and Actions) Method to Facilitate Dialogue between Stakeholders”

    Professor Lochard introduced participants from the international organizations and gave a lecture on the importance of dialogue with stakeholders. He then gave a lecture on the IDPA methods for discussions, which will be used during the seminar.

  • Role of Futaba Medical Center

    “Current Situation of the Affected Area 12 Years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident-Medical System Development-”

    Futaba Medical Center has been newly opened in Tomioka town since 2018. Dr. Tanigawa gave a lecture on the medical system development in Futaba town, which was disrupted by the nuclear accident.

  • Current status of treated water at the FDNPP

    “Reconstruction and Decommissioning in Fukushima”

    After the participants visited the TEPCO Decommissioning Museum and studied an overview of the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the progress of decommissioning, and the management of treated water, Mr. Kino gave a lecture on the progress of measures and future initiatives for the disposal of Advanced Liquid Processing System-treated water.

    Assistant Professor Matsunaga gave lectures about research activities and risk communication with the residents of Fukushima.

  • Reconstruction Efforts in Kawauchi Village and current issues

    The mayor of Kawauchi village, Mr. Endo, gave a lecture on the reconstruction process of the village after the nuclear accident and current challenges. At the end of the session, Professor Lochard expresses his gratitude.

  • His municipal staff experience after the accident

    “Lessons from the Combined Disaster, Today’s Recovery Update” Mr. Ide, who was head of General Affairs of the Kawauchi Village Office at the time of the accident and strongly promoted the reconstruction of Kawauchi Village, gave a lecture on his experiences after the disaster.
