On November 21–25, 2022, an International Training Course on Nuclear Disaster Recovery was held in Kawauchi village, Tomioka town, Okuma town, and Futaba town, Fukushima Prefecture. The seminar was attended by master’s and doctoral students from the Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, international organizations such as the IAEA, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development/NEA, and ICRP, and experts from universities and research institutes.

    Professor Takamura gave a lecture entitled “Overview of Nagasaki University’s Fukushima Reconstruction Support”. He then introduced a video entitled “Nagasaki University ´ Kawauchi Village: 10 Years of Progress” as part of a reconstruction support initiative.

    “Risk Communication in the Recovery Phase after a Nuclear Accident: The Contribution of the Co-expertise Process” and “A Short Introduction to the IDPA (Identification, Diagnostic, Prospective and Actions) Method to Facilitate Dialogue between Stakeholders”

    Professor Lochard introduced participants from the international organizations and gave a lecture on the importance of dialogue with stakeholders. He then gave a lecture on the IDPA methods for discussions, which will be used during the seminar.

    “Reconstruction and Decommissioning in Fukushima”

    After the participants visited the TEPCO Decommissioning Museum and studied an overview of the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the progress of decommissioning, and the management of treated water, Mr. Kino gave a lecture on the progress of measures and future initiatives for the disposal of Advanced Liquid Processing System-treated water.

    “Lessons from the Combined Disaster, Today’s Recovery Update”

    Mr. Ide, who was head of General Affairs of the Kawauchi Village Office at the time of the accident and strongly promoted the reconstruction of Kawauchi Village, gave a lecture on his experiences after the disaster.

    Associate Professor Taira and Assistant Professor Matsunaga gave lectures on environmental radioactivity assessment, food monitoring status, and local radiation health risk communication.

    “Current Situation of the Affected Area 11 Years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident”

    Futaba Medical Center has been newly opened in Tomioka town since 2018. Dr. Tanigawa gave a lecture on the medical system development in Futaba town, which was disrupted by the nuclear accident.
